Play with numbers

Think of a two digit number, say 42, then subtract the reverse of its digits, 24, from 42

42-24 =18
hence 18 is product of 9
also 1+8=9

Choose any two digits number and for each one reverse the digits and subtract the smaller number from the larger.  Look at all the answers you get.  Do they all have a common divisor?  What do the digits sum to each time?

Some Examples:
92-29 =63
hence 63 is product of 9
also 6+3=9

41-14 =27
hence 27 is product of 9
also 2+7 =9

83-38 =45
hence 45 is product of 9
also 4+5 =9
You see how fascinating and enjoying it is. In each case the difference is divisible by 9 (i.e. the common factor is 9) and the sum of the digits of the difference is always 9.

Double and Half Method

Double and Half Method

The double and half method is used to make two numbers easier to multiply. The idea is you can double one number and half the other before multiplying.

         1)  35 x 24 =    35 x 2  x  24 ÷ 2   =   70 x 12 = 840.

Here 24 is divided by 2 and multiple that 2 with 35  to  make the figures easy to multiple orally

                The answer is 840.

         2)  57 x 22 =   57 x 2  x  22 ÷ 2  = 114 x 11 = 1254.

                The answer is 1254.

Here  22 is divided by 2 and  multiple that 2 with 57  to  make the figures easy to multiple orally

       3)   6 1/4 x 96 =
         Multiply and Divide by 4.

          6 1/4 x 4 x  96 ÷ 4  =  25 x 24 = 600.

        The answer is 600.

         4)   66 x 21 =

       Multiply and Divide by 6.

        66 ÷ 6  x  21 x 6 =  126 x 11 = 1386.

      The answer is 1386.

Divisibility Test of Numbers

Divisibility Test of Numbers

Dividing By 2:      A number is divisible by 2 if the last digit is even.
Dividing By 3:     A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of all the digits is divisible by 3.
Ex [1]                 34,164 is divisible by 3 because 3+4+1+6+4 = 18 which is divisible by 3.
To find the remainder of a number divided by 3, add the digits and find that remainder. So if the
digits added together equal 13 then the number has a remainder of 1 since 13 divided by 3 has a
remainder of 1.

Dividing By 4:     A number is divisible by 4 if the last 2-digits are divisible by 4.
Ex [1]                 34,164 is divisible by 4 because 64 is divisible by 4.
To find the remainder of a number divided by 4 take the remainder of the last 2 digits. So if the
last 2-digits are 13 then the number has a remainder of 1 since 13 divided by 4 has a remainder
of 1.

Dividing By 5:   A number is divisible by 5 if the last digit is a 5 or a 0.
To find the remainder of a number divided by 5 simply use the last digit. If it is greater than 5,
subtract 5 for the remainder.

Dividing By 6:   A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by 2 and by 3.
Ex [1]               34,164 is divisible by 6 because it is divisible by 2 and 3.
Dividing By 7:   A number is divisible by 7 if the following is true:
1. Multiply the ones digit by 2.
2. Subtract this value from the rest of the number.
3. Continue this pattern until you find a number you know is or is not divisible by 7.
Ex [1]               7203 is divisible by 7 because
a) 2x3= 6.
b) 720 – 6 = 714 which is divisible by 7.
Ex [2]               14443 is not divisible by 7 because
a) 3x2= 6.
b) 1444 – 6 = 1438.
c) 8x2= 16.
d) 143 – 16 = 127 which is not divisible by 7.

Dividing By 8:   A number is divisible by 8 if the last 3-digits are divisible by 8.
Ex [1]               34,168 is divisible by 8 because 168 is divisible by 8.

Dividing By 9:   A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 9.
Ex [1]               34,164 is divisible by 9 because 3+4+1+6+4 = 18 which is divisible by 9.

Dividing By 10: A number is divisible by 10 if the last digit is a 0.

Dividing By 11: A number is divisible by 11 if this is true:
Step1:               Add all even place digits  of a number
Step2:               Add odd place digits of a number
Step3:               Subtract 1st Step from the 2nd Step
If this value is 0 then the number is divisible by 11. If it is not 0 then this is the remainder after dividing by 11 if it is positive. If the number is negative add 11 to it to get the remainder.
Ex [1]               6613585 is divisible by 11 since (5+5+1+6) – (8+3+6) = 0.

Dividing By 12:   A number is divisible by 12 if it is divisible by 3 and by 4.
Ex [1]               34,164 is divisible by 12 because it is divisible by 3 and 4.

Multiplying And Adding Numbers

Multiplying And Adding Numbers In The Form: ab + bc

A. From algebra we can factor: ab + bc = b(a + c)

B. Using numbers instead of variables we get the following:

1. Take out the number that both sides have in common.

2. Add the remaining numbers.

3. Multiply the number in step 1 with the result in step 2 for the answer.

Ex [1] 15 x 12 + 15 x 8 =_________.

a) Rewrite in the form 15 x (12 + 8).

b) 15 x 20 = 300.
